Austin Peterson

Mr. Peterson is a member of Seltzer Caplan McMahon Vitek’s Transactional Tax Planning & Tax Controversy Department, helping clients make financial decisions that minimize tax risks and maximize investments. Formerly at a Big 4 firm, he prioritizes keeping abreast of ever-changing tax laws and conducting the necessary research to help clients stay in compliance and address tax issues that may arise.

Education

Mr. Peterson obtained his law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law with a Business Law & Policy Specialization. He was a member of the “Indigenous Peoples’ Journal of Law, Culture, and Resistance, a founding representative of the Program on Understanding Law, Science, & Evidence and took first place in the Corporate Transactional Law Meet in 2019. He earned bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and business administration at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. While earning his undergraduate degrees, he was involved in the Sigma Nu Fraternity and the Williams Investment Society, and was an active member of his campus community.

Employment Background

Before joining SCMV, Mr. Peterson was a senior associate at PWC, focusing on state and local tax (SALT) due diligence for mergers and acquisitions on all tax aspects such as income tax, sales and use tax, property tax, payroll tax and more. He has worked on transactions in every state and internationally, typically involving deals around $500 million. Mr. Peterson prepares 100-day plans for integrating the tax aspects of new acquisitions into a client's operations. Additionally, he represents clients in tax appeal hearings, negotiating with local authorities to minimize penalties on late or incorrect filings.

During law school, he served as a judicial extern in the Los Angeles Superior Court and as a law clerk for a workplace rights law firm.
