The Law at Work: Endless summer: Rewards and risks of unlimited vacation policies

In his latest The Law at Work column in the San Diego Union-Tribune, SCMV Shareholder Dan Eaton examines the relatively new concept of unlimited vacation policies being adopted by such companies as LinkedIn, Netflix, and other California-based innovators. An unlimited vacation policy obviously benefits the employee, but it also benefits the employer by potentially eliminating accrued vacation day payouts. There is risk to the employer in adopting such a policy because no reported decision has confirmed its legality under California law. Some employee advocates have argued that unlimited vacation policies are unlawful in California.
